Hair Anatomy

Hair can be divided into the hair follicle, which produces the hair we see. This is where the hair receives its nutrients from the scalp via blood vessels. It is estimated that a human scalp can have up to 100,000 hair follicles.
The visible part of the hair is the hair shaft, which is the part of the hair we can see growing out of our scalp and the part we apply products to. Terminal hair is the dark thick hair that we see on our scalp. The hair shaft is mainly made of keratin, which is a protective protein constructed from amino acids. Our day to day maintenance of our hair is focused on the hair shaft using products to moisturize it and to keep the ends trimmed.
It is so important to view hair as most than just what is visible with the naked eye. As you can appreciate in the hair diagram, hair follicles need to be nourished by blood vessels. These blood vessels carry the vital vitamins, minerals, and water the hair needs. Your healthy hair journey truly starts with what you eat as it is reflected in the type of nourishment your hair follicle will receive. You cannot expect to have healthy hair if your body is severely malnourished or dehydrated. Once you have attained a healthy diet then with careful product selection and gentle care of the hair shaft can you then start to appreciate length retention from reduced damage and breakage of hair strands.
