Essential Oils

So what exactly are essential oils? They are a concentrated hydrophobic liquid concentrated from plants.

Because essential oils are essentially pure extracts directly from plants they can be expensive, but you don’t need much to see results. You really don’t want to use too much because they are very concentrated. You should add them to a carrier oil (coconut oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, and olive oil) when applying to your hair to dilute them and concentrate this on your scalp.

I concentrate essential oils on my scalp and use them exclusively for scalp massages.

Lavender

Lavender can be found in Cape Verde and the Canary islands. It has been known to help with sleep and to improve stress, but can also improve the health of your hair.

There have been studies that have shown lavender to be helpful in hair growth. It can also be quite calming on the scalp.

Peppermint

Peppermint comes from a plant that is native to Europe. It has been shown to be helpful in stimulating the growth of the hair follicle, thus treating hair loss. It can have a stimulating effect on the scalp.

One major problem using peppermint oil is that it can be very overwhelming. I would recommend that you not use much (just a few drops).

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a shrub native to Australia. It has been used for the skin for several years and more recently has expanded to the scalp.

Tea tree oil can have a tremendous impact on dandruff as it helps to prevent buildup and dry skin. It is also known to have antifungal and antibacterial benefits.

A combination of carrier oils and essential oils can make a huge difference in the health of your hair.
