Phases of Hair Cycle
We are all so eager to achieve long hair, but it is not that simple. Currently, I do not believe there is a product on the market that will make your hair grow feet overnight. But without a good understanding of the science of hair growth it can be easy to fall into the trap that there will be a product to help me achieve my goals without applying the principles of a healthy lifestyle and consistent hair care.
Understanding the phases of the hair cycle can help you better appreciate why it takes time to appreciate length in your hair. Remember to stay patient throughout the process and enjoy the journey. Your hair journey is so much more than your hair goal.
Stages of hair growth
Anagen
Growing phase – active phase is when the hair grows about ½ inch (1 cm) per month. It is the longest stage of hair growth lasting about 2-6 years. The duration of your anagen phase can impact the length of your hair (shorter anagen phases leads to shorter lengths as the hair stops growing).
Catagen
Transition phase – hair follicle shrinks and hair growth slows getting ready to detach. It lasts about 10 days.
Telogen
Resting phase – hair is at a standstill and forms a club hair (end product of hair growth).
Exogen
Shedding phase – old hair sheds and new hair starts to grow in follicles. Lasts about 2-5 months.
