Regular Trims

A trim is the removal of damaged ends. The amount removed during a trim depends on how much damaged hair exists. Usually a trim removes less hair than a cut, but can vary widely depending on the condition of your hair. Initially a trim may seem like a lot of hair is being removed, but this is often because there is quite a bit of damaged hair that needs to be removed until you are on a healthy hair regimen. Over time less hair should be removed with each trim once on a regular schedule as the overall health of your hair will be better. It may seem strange that it will be important to trim your hair regularly in order to achieve your hair length goals as you are removing hair with each trim, but without regular trims you will not be able to maintain the length you grow because your hair will be unhealthy.

Some opt to have their trim done by a professional to ensure all damaged hair is removed and it is done with even ends. While others opt to trim their ends at home at their convenience. At home trims are not always as even, but it gives you more control over how much hair is removed. Home trims can also be less stressful for people who are not ready to cut all their damaged hair off at once or who have bad memories from a prior stylist.

No matter how you decide to trim your hair, it is important to remove damaged ends/split ends, otherwise this damage will travel up the hair shaft and worsen the condition of the rest of your hair. The removal of the ends early prevents this process and therefore allows you to retain more length in the long run. You do not want unhealthy hair and that is what will happen if you do not trim your ends on a regular basis. You have to remember to “take care of your elders (ends)”.

Usually the recommendation is a trim every 2-3 months, but the frequency may differ depending on the condition of your hair and how well you protect your ends.
