Water
Do not underestimate the power of water.
Water makes up about 60% of our body weight. Water is crucial for all bodily functions. Just to name a few things it aids in digestion, lubricates joints, helps with mental clarity, and regulates body temperature. It is estimated that men need about 125oz (3.7 liters) per day and women about 91oz (2.7 liters). Your scalp needs water to feed the hair follicle and promote growth. Signs that your scalp is dry is flaking and itchiness (these can also be signs of scalp conditions and you may need to consult with a dermatologist to ensure it is a not a medical condition causing your scalp to be dry or itchy).
Water can often be overlooked in the rush of life. If you are anything like me, you can go an entire day without drinking much at all. Sometimes I think that my thirst meter is broken. I scratch my head thinking that if water is so important, why am I not thirsty. Since I have not figured out the answer as to why I am not thirsty most of the time, I now focus on finding ways to trick myself into drinking more water. You may need to do the same if you are not drinking much water. Create a system where you keep track of how much you are drinking. As Peter Drucker has said, “if you don’t measure it, then you can’t manage it”.
Personally I have found that breaking up the day into segments, helps to portion out the water you need to drink for the day. You can try to break your day up into 3 parts and create goals for each part of the day. For example, if your goal is to drink 90 oz of water per day, you can say that by 12pm you will drink 30 oz, then by 3pm another 30z, and finally 30oz by 6pm so that you are not drinking too much water close to bedtime. There are also apps that can help you keep track of how much water you are drinking and there are devices that you can attach to your water bottle that will signal you to drink and track your progress.
