How to care for hair extensions

Hair extensions are a financial investment. It goes without saying that you must buy quality hair. But also you need to learn how to care for your hair extensions once you’ve purchased them so you get the most return on that investment. Just like how you care for your own hair, you should also take the time to care for your extensions. There are different steps to take when the extensions are in your hair compared to when you have removed them and getting ready to put them back in.

Let’s start by talking about what to do when your extensions are in your hair. The ends of the extensions are what show the most wear and tear. They are the oldest part of the hair and if they are colored they may also be the most dry. You do want to be in the position where you have to cut the ends of the extensions because they’re extremely damaged. Human hair extensions should be treated as you would your own hair.

1. Wear a silk bonnet/Sleep on a silk pillowcase

Silk is great to sleep on because it does not dry your hair out the way that cotton can. Also cotton does not have a smooth surface and can snag your hair causing it to break. Especially for those that move a lot while sleeping there can be a lot of friction on the hair if you are sleeping on cotton without your hair protected.

2. Wear hair in a loose braid or bun at night

Just as you want your hair to be protected when you are sleeping with a silk bonnet or by sleeping on a silk pillowcase, you should keep your hair tied up. You don’t want your hair loose as it can cause it to tangle and snap. When your hair is in a braid or bun, it helps to keep it organized. Take the extra 5-10 minutes before bed to put your hair up.

3. Use silk scrunchies

When you put your hair up during the day or at night you want to use silk for the same reasons that you want to sleep in a silk bonnet or silk pillowcase. Silk helps to reduce breakage.

4. Oil Ends of Hair

Once per week, you will need to add oil to the ends of the extensions. Do not add to the roots. Adding oil to the ends will help to keep them smooth and less tangled.
