Exercise

Exercise is vital to overall well being.

Exercise helps to improve cardiovascular health needed to provide adequate blood flow to all organs and to build muscle.

Not only is exercise needed for physical health, but also important for mental health. Exercise has been linked to improving mood by reducing anxiety and depression as well as increase in cognitive function. It is believed that exercise increases blood flow to the brain especially the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis, which is important in emotional regulation.

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends you exercise about 5 times per week for about 30 minutes. There are also those that call themselves “weekend warriors”. These are people that exercise over 2 hours on the weekend to make up for the time they are not working out during the week. Either way, adequate exercise during the week helps to stimulate blood flow to all parts of the body including the scalp. This ensures that hair follicles receive adequate nourishment.

There are many different forms of exercise you can try. Examples include running, biking, swimming, spinning, hiking, tennis, basketball, pickleball, racquetball, football, soccer, CrossFit, TRX, and many others. The wonderful thing about exercise is that there are so many different types to try until you find one that you enjoy and fits your lifestyle.

I would recommend starting slow and then working your way up to a regular exercise routine. As I like to say, life is a marathon and not a race. You do not need to change your life overnight, but rather take small consistent steps towards achieving your goals.
