Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Blood contains four important components including red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. Platelet rich plasma is when plasma and platelets are separated from red and white blood cells using a centrifuge (a machine that spins at high speeds). The process to obtain PRP involves a blood draw on the day of the procedure. Your blood is then put into a centrifuge to obtain your plasma and platelets.

Once PRP has been obtained it is put into a syringe and then injected deep into the scalp where the hair follicles live. It is believed that the platelets are able to stimulate dermal papilla cells which are responsible for hair growth. You will need a three injection series separated by four weeks and then maintenance injections every three to six months.

PRP injections should be performed by a trained medical provider. Usually areas with thinning are targeted when injecting PRP. It has been used in those with androgenetic alopecia and used in conjunction with minoxidil or finasteride. Results have been better for those with thinning hair before reaching complete baldness. This can be an expensive process and should be discussed with your medical provider.
