Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a medical condition that causes the skin to form itchy dry scaly patches. There are various forms of psoriasis including plaque, guttate, inverse, pustular, and erythrodermic, just to name a few. The most common locations affected by psoriasis is the scalp, knees, elbows, trunk, soles of the feet, and palms. It can even involve nails and joints. There is no cure for this chronic condition, but it can be managed with treatment. Psoriasis is believed to affect anywhere from 2-3% of the population worldwide.

Psoriasis skin lesions are a result of upregulation of skin cell turnover. No clear cause has been identified for this condition. Usually psoriatic outbreaks occur in episodes or flares. Common triggers for flares include stress, cold weather, illness, smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, and withdrawal of corticosteroids.

Psoriasis of the scalp can cause significant irritation and interrupt healthy hair growth. You should seek help from a medical provider for treatment options.
