Hot Oil Treatment

So what is a hot oil treatment?

Are there any benefits of a hot oil treatment for my hair?

How do you do a hot oil treatment at home?

A hot oil treatment is the use of a plant based oil, such as coconut, olive, avocado, jojoba, or argan oil to seal the hair cuticles.

There are many benefits that can come from using a hot oil treatment on dry hair that is prone to breakage. Because the oil can act as a sealant for the hair cuticle it helps to reduce breakage by retaining moisture in the hair and adds strength to the hair. You may notice a reduction in split ends and a shine to your hair.

It is important to use 100% pure oils and not those mixed with synthetic ingredients as this can lead to an adverse reaction on your scalp. You will want to test the temperature of the oil before putting it directly in your scalp and hair. This can be done by putting a dab of oil on your inner wrist to make sure it is not too hot.

Wash your hair as you normally would with shampoo. Warm the oil for no more than 10-15 seconds in the microwave, just to warm it up a little. Test the temperature on your wrist. You will then massage it into your scalp and hair for 60 seconds and place a shower cap over your hair for 30 minutes to let it soak into your hair strands. After you rinse out the hot oil treatment you can continue with your normal deep conditioner.

You can do a hot oil treatment on each of your wash days if you think it is needed, but as your hair gets healthier over time, you will start to notice that you do not need the hot oil treatments as often.
