Hair Loss – Wigs and Hair Extensions

It can be very difficult to lose hair. Some of us have our identity intertwined with our hair. Were you always known for having full long hair and now your hair is thinning at the crown or around your hairline (edges)? Have you suddenly gotten sick and your hair is starting to fall out? Know this…you are not alone. I am still astonished by how little people talk about the reality of their hair journey, but for many it can be embarrassing to talk about. Maybe you’re worried that people will laugh at you or think less of you. Will people see you as less attractive if they really knew how little hair you have or none at all. I am here to reassure you that you are beautiful just the way you are you should have no shame.

My personal hair journey started young. I was made fun of for my short hair and lived in braids. But this meant that I never learned to love my hair or myself. It was not until I was older and cut off all my hair that I felt liberated. From that point on I made a conscious decision that what I do with my hair was mine alone to decide. No longer would others make me feel bad about my hair or what I do with it.

Now I want to share with others all that I have learned about the science of hair and what is possible. I took the time to get my cosmetology degree and to try multiple hair treatments on myself.  I have made mistakes along the way, but it has made me better at hair science because of it.

At this stage in my life I will try just about anything with my hair as long as I can keep my natural hair healthy and is overall nontoxic. For example, I remember growing up, I always thought wigs were for old people. Why would I ever want to wear a wig? They look so fake…I would never be caught dead in one and now hear I am “comfortably” wearing wigs.

My goal now is to educate people on how to keep their hair healthy while changing up their hairstyles and to not feel embarrassed or ashamed if their hair does not look like what is seen in social media. We should have a safe space to talk about  wigs and hair extensions without shame, but only and if that person wants to share. People should not make others feel bad about wearing extensions and to be honest I am tired of hearing people say “is that all your hair”? That is a rude question and should not be asked. It is not considered the norm to ask people private questions about their body and should not be any different with hair. If you want to talk about your hair then that decision should be left up to the individual. There is nothing bad about wearing extensions, but it is unacceptable to pressure people into talking about it if not ready.

Ok…now that I am done with my rant lets get down to the nitty gritty.

We’re going to talk about how to keep your hair healthy under extensions. No more covering your hair without taking care of what’s underneath. We will no longer buy into the hair industry that wants to keep us dependent on extensions. I love wearing extensions, but I want my own hair to be just as long if not longer than the extensions I am wearing. The only reason I wear extensions is because I want to be able to change my look up without damaging my own hair. I want that to be you too! Join me as I teach you how to care for your hair in extensions.
